Renovation For Retirement

March 9, 2012, Courbefy, France: A renovation project can be an ideal project to help you make the most of your retirement overseas.

Dear Live and Invest Overseas Reader,

Taking on the renovation of an historic property in France has been the occupation of many a retiree from the U.K. and the U.S. The romantic appeal is undeniable, and, thinking the idea through more practically, property prices in rural France can be really cheap.

I know this because my wife, Kathleen Peddicord, is perpetually paying attention to this market.

This week, for example, she sent me a Skype message to draw my attention to a 200-square-meter property for sale in a small town in Midi-Pyrenees. It's on the market for €97,000, or about €500 a square meter. I don't know current renovation costs in this part of France, but I figure maybe €1,000 a meter, depending how fancy you renovate. That means you're looking at €1,500 a square meter all in, which is a reasonable total. Still, that translates into a total cost of €300,000, which may not fit everyone's budget. The property listing is here if you're interested.

Retirement Options In Southeast Asia

“We’re Living Through The Asian Century, After All”

March 8, 2012, Panama City, Panama: Asia offers some of the cheapest retirement havens in the world, including in Thailand, Vietnam, India, and China.

Dear Live and Invest Overseas Reader,

This week we're talking about the world's top havens, the best places on earth to think about spending time and money right now, from the Americas to the Continent to, today, Asia.

This is the approach we will be taking when Lief Simon and I convene in Scottsdale, Arizona, April 30 through May 2, with more than three-dozen expats, experts, friends, colleagues, and key contacts from all across the globe, for our 2012 Retire Overseas Conference. Over the three days of this event, we will introduce the assembled group to the world's top choices for living, retiring, investing, or starting a business overseas.

Destinations in the Americas can be sunny and warm, nearby and accessible, friendly and welcoming, and, sometimes, above all, super-affordable.

Retire To Europe

Top Havens On The Continent

March 7, 2012, Panama City, Panama: Not everyone is cut out for life in the tropics or the developing world. Retirement in Europe can be more comfortable, more appointed, and more cosmopolitan. Here are the five best places to think about retiring in Europe right now.

Dear Live and Invest Overseas Reader,

April 30 through May 2, Lief Simon and I will be in Scottsdale, Arizona, along with more than three-dozen expats and experts, friends, colleagues, and key contacts from all across the globe, convening with us for this 2012 Retire Overseas Conference to introduce the assembled group to the best places on earth to think about spending time and money right now...the world's top choices for living, retiring, investing, or starting a business overseas.

We intend to organize the program geographically. As I explained yesterday, first we'll look at the top havens of the Americas.

Investment Havens In Latin America

11 Top Havens Of The Americas

March 6, 2012, Panama City, Panama: During our Retire Overseas Conference taking place April 30-May 2 in Scottsdale, Arizona, experts and expats will introduce you to the top 10 retirement, lifestyle, business, and investment choices in Latin America.

Dear Live and Invest Overseas Reader,

Over three days in Scottsdale, Arizona, at our Retire Overseas Conference, which will kick off April 30, we're going to introduce you to the world's best options right now for spending your time and your money...the best places on earth to live, retire, invest, or start a business.

Starting in Latin America.

We give a lot of virtual press to Latin America because this part of the world is sunny, accessible (from North America and, depending on the destination, from Europe, too), welcoming, interesting, diverse, friendly, home to established and expanding communities of expatriates, bursting with business and investment opportunity, and, in some spots, sublimely affordable.

Visa Options In Southeast Asia

Legal Options For Retiring In The World’s Cheapest Retirement Havens

March 5, 2012, Southeast Asia: Southeast Asia offers some of the world’s cheapest places to retire. Here’s a guide to your legal options for arranging long-term and retirement residency in the top retirement havens of Southeast Asia

Dear Live and Invest Overseas Reader,

"One important point to be made about retiring in Southeast Asia," writes Asia Correspondent Wendy Justice, "is that not every country in this region offers a retirement visa.

"Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia, for example, do not have any sort of extended visa specifically for retirees.

"It is possible, nevertheless, to live or retire in these countries. For example, in Laos or Cambodia, you could volunteer with one of the many NGOs. Volunteering or working even a few days per month is often enough to qualify you for a long-term visa.
