Reasons For Relocating Overseas

We Couldn't Have Planned This If We'd Tried

April 12, 2012, Medellin, Colombia: Lief and I have been living, investing, and doing business overseas for more than 27 years. We’re well-diversified and, on the surface, may seem pretty smart. But, the truth is, we didn’t set out to be where we are today. This is just where we’ve ended up.

Dear Live and Invest Overseas Reader,

Lief and I have been at this living and investing overseas thing a long time. We've logged more than two-and-a-half decades apiece running around the globe...scouting...researching...discovering...moving...

What's been the point?

Readers, friends, and family from the States have been writing to say, "Things are bad." They want to get move on... They're in search of options.

We're already out, as it were. We left the States nearly a decade-and-a-half ago. Are we better off?

Expat Life And Safety Concerns

Padlocks, Painters, and Pepperidge Farm

April 11, 2012, Medellin, Colombia: Medellin, Colombia, has a reputation as a dangerous place, thanks to its Pablo Escobar-led history of drug-related violence. However, Medellin today is a safe and peaceful city, a pleasant and welcoming place to spend time.

Dear Live and Invest Overseas Reader,

"Señora, señora!" the young man called out as he sped toward us on his motorcycle.

My assistant Marion and I were walking down the hill, a couple of blocks from my apartment in Medellin, headed for the bank. The young man calling out to me from a little farther ahead continued shouting enthusiastically (in Spanish...but I'll translate), as he pulled his motorcycle up alongside where we'd paused on the sidewalk and killed the engine:

"Señora, I'd like to paint your office!"

I looked at Marion, and she looked back at me, then we both looked again at the young man before us, who was now grinning from ear to ear and waving his arm in greeting.

Retirement Haven That’s Right For You

What Gets Your Blood Flowing?

April 10, 2012, Medellin, Colombia: The best way to identify the overseas retirement haven that’s right for you is to start by identifying your passion. What’s most important and most interesting to you? Follow that interest to a new live overseas.

Dear Live and Invest Overseas Reader,

"So many choices...what do you suggest?"...wondered one dear reader yesterday.

If you have a particular agenda, your challenge is mitigated. If yours is a strict and modest budget, for example, you must choose a country where the cost of living is low (Ecuador, Nicaragua, Uruguay, Thailand, or Vietnam, say).

If you intend to start a business in your new life overseas, then your top choices are entrepreneur-friendly jurisdictions (Panama is the front-runner).

If you have an ongoing health concern, then you can think about moving only to those places that offer top-notch medical care (typically this means sticking close to a city big enough to have international-standard facilities).

Rental Property In Medellin, Colombia

Conflicting Agendas

April 9, 2012, Medellin, Colombia: One of the biggest conflicts related to choosing a property for rental investment can be whether to buy a place strictly for investment or to buy a place where you also want to be able to spend time.

Dear Live and Invest Overseas Reader,

People ask all the time: What have I missed most about Baltimore, Maryland, where I grew up, all these years that I've been living outside the States?

My family, too, of course, but what I miss most about the place where I lived Stateside when I lived Stateside is the transition from winter to summer. Baltimore may not have a whole lot to recommend it, but it serves up a great spring. Friends living there still have been writing for the past week to tell me of the early spring Baltimore is enjoying this year...and I've been envious.

Emergency Offshore Summit

Why More Americans Than Ever Are Seeking Options And Safety Offshore

April 8, 2012, Medellin, Colombia: A fundamental shift has taken place in how the IRS views its role. In the face of the current situation in the United States, the IRS now sees itself as a cash-generating business. The consequences for American tax-payers are grave and are resulting in more Americans than ever seeking new lives, freedom, and safety offshore.

Dear Overseas Opportunity Letter Reader,

The number of American expatriations is at a record high, reports an international tax attorney friend. The reality right now is that tens of thousands of Americans a year are moving abroad in search of better lives.

"A root cause," my friend explains, "is how the U.S. government is treating its citizens these days.
