Panama City, Panama
"The recent reader e-mail asking, '
What about Merida, Mexico?' got
me thinking," writes Correspondent Lucy
Culpepper.
"During our extended
sabbatical last year, while we were
traveling around in search of the place we
wanted to settle down next with our
children, we planned a visit to Merida.
"Some places you just don't connect with
even when you really want to.
"We'd
spent hours researching, enjoying website
reviews, and preparing for our trip. But, in
the flesh, Merida was one of those places
where I knew straightaway I didn't want to
live there. What was it? The heat? The
congestion? The low-lying land? Probably the
sum of all those parts. It was disappointing
not to like the place, but it wasn't a
disaster. We had rented a house for a month
a half-hour away, by the sea, so we
retreated there to make a new plan.
"One place that we visited and did like in
this part of Mexico was the city of
Campeche, also on the Yucatan Peninsula. It
is hot and humid but not hot the way Merida
is hot. Campeche is on the Gulf of Mexico,
with a pretty boardwalk and a beautiful
center. The city is rightly a UNESCO World
Heritage Site but is missed by many tourists
en route from Merida to Villa Hermosa.
"You can fly into Campeche from Mexico
City."
