"Kathleen, I am a subscriber to both your and Lief's newsletters and have just started reading your new book.

"I am planning to retire out of the USA and have narrowed my decision to Belize or Roatan, Honduras. Our only source of income will be mine and my wife's Social Security checks.

"In your opinion, which area do you feel is best, and why do you recommend one over the other?"

--Rich M., United States

As we say often, no place is inherently "better" than any other, and certainly no single destination is "best," period. It's all a matter of what you're looking for and what's important to you.

What kind of lifestyle do you want?

With two Social Security checks monthly, you and your wife should be able to live comfortably in either Belize or Roatan. Parts of Belize (Cayo, for example) would be more affordable than Roatan. The cost of living in Ambergris Caye would be comparable, more or less the same as the cost of living on Roatan.

If you want Caribbean (as I suspect you do, given your focus), Ambergris and Roatan are both great choices (probably my two preferred spots in the region). Which would be better for you? The only way to answer that question would be to spend time in both. One likely will feel more like home to you, more comfortable. Go with that gut response. At the end of the day, it can be the most important determining factor of all.

The World's Best Healthcare For A Tiny Fraction Of The Cost You're Paying Now (Plus Health Insurance For US$100 Per Month Or Less)

In many places around the world, it's possible still to enjoy very personal care, where you, the patient, work in partnership with your doctor to determine the best course of treatment.

Healthcare overseas is also much more affordable. The reason for this is because there's no pressure in these places from any insurance industry...and no pressure from any pharmaceutical industry either.

A doctor's visit for US$20...or even US$5...prescription medications for one-tenth the cost...Cosmetic surgery for 70%...80%...even 90% less...even quality nursing care for as little as US$450 per month, including 24-hour doctor and nurse attendance, food, laundry, personal care, and occupational/rehabilitative therapy...

"I have to say that you seem to dig deeper into the feel of a particular place and to do comparative analysis between alternative places. Your approach is more sophisticated and thoughtful and therefore more useful than that of other information sources covering these same subjects."

"Thank you for all your hard work. You have made a lot of people dream and a lot of dreams come true. I enjoy all the e-mails from all your staff living all over the world. I am always telling people about you and how you started your publications years ago. In fact, I just today told my banker about how honest and smart you are, letting us know where to go. Wish I had listened to you more years ago..."
