Jan. 19, 2011:

"Kathleen, I was recently referred to your website, and I see that you are promoting Belize.

"I have been to Belize a couple of times for business and pleasure since 2004. I really like the country and am considering moving there full-time. The United States is really out of control these days.

"I have no problem selling my home here in Florida and whatever it takes to build a new life in Belize. I am 43-years-young and self-employed, working on the Internet, so income would not be an issue.

"My concern is paying U.S. income taxes while living in Belize. Do you know if retired U.S. citizens are required to pay income taxes in the United States even if they're living elsewhere...in Belize, for example? I know that, under the Belizean program for retirees, a U.S. citizen retired there does not pay income taxes to the Belizean government.

"Thanks for any help you can give."

--John J., United States

If you set up your Internet company offshore (that is, outside the United States and, in this case, outside Belize), then you can take a salary from that company up to the current amount of the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (US$91,500 in 2010) and pay no U.S. taxes on that earned income.

You'll still have to file tax returns every year in the United States, both personal and for your corporation, even though it's outside the U.S. However, if you set things up properly, you'll pay no taxes, neither in the United States nor in Belize.

If this is your plan, you should join us in Belize next month for our Live & Invest in Belize Conference, Feb. 21-23. Among the two-dozen speakers at this event will be attorneys, residency advisors, tax experts, and others who could help you to organize your business and financial affairs safely and compliantly. Again, the net result should be that you pay no tax in either jurisdiction.

Readers Say

"I have to say that you seem to dig deeper into the feel of a particular place and to do comparative analysis between alternative places. Your approach is more sophisticated and thoughtful and therefore more useful than that of other information sources covering these same subjects."

— John W., United States
"Just great. Very welcoming and supplied answers to all questions very well. I'll see you again soon."
