"Kathleen, very nice posts with useful information. I especially enjoyed the article on taking children with you to live in a foreign country. You are very right. The older the child, the harder the adjustment can be.
"Speaking from personal experience with our four sons in Brazil, we were fortunate to have the grandparents visit once every year and aunts/uncles/cousins also visiting from time to time. Each U.S. summer or during the 'summer breaks' for students in Brazil, our kids would visit relatives in the United States from four to eight weeks. Our kids attended local schools in Brazil, and this added to their cross-cultural experiences.
"Your comments about Panama are also accurate. It is a wonderful place to live and still relatively inexpensive. I would also recommend the Caribbean coast of Honduras and the islands of Roatan and Utila. Chiang Mai, Thailand--and Chiang Rai--are also great places to spend time on an extended basis. Costa Rica is really not cheap any longer but a very beautiful country. I am also a big fan of Oaxaca and Patzcuaro in Mexico and the coastal area around Escondido.
"Thank you again for your posts. I would really like to see some articles about long-term rentals in a foreign country of one to four months each year. Many retirees like myself plan to remain mainly in the United States but would like the experience of living in a foreign country for several months each year. Maybe you could show us how to do this without getting burned or mislead."
