Algarve, Portugal | Overseas Haven Report
Located at Europe’s westernmost tip and boasting 100 miles of Atlantic coastline, Algarve could be Europe’s most famous secret. This region boasts Europe’s best beaches, Europe’s best golf courses, some of Europe’s friendliest folk, and Western Europe’s lowest cost of living. It’s also Europe’s newest tax haven.
Algarve has been Live and Invest Overseas’ the World’s #1 Retirement Haven for several years running now… That’s a distinction we don’t bestow lightly or easily, but our editorial team has a lot of experience at this… We’ve been rating and ranking the world’s best places to spend time in retirement for 30 years now—we can tell you from firsthand experience, the Algarve really nails it.
A safe region, with very little crime and a laid-back lifestyle for expats, this destination caters equally to families and retirees with its culture, cuisine, Blue Flag beaches, historical cities, and so much more. And the Algarve is also a world-recognized golf destination… at last count there were 42 courses in less than 100 square miles.
Thanks to its 3,300 hours of sunshine per year, more sunny days than almost anywhere else in Europe, the Algarve has a longstanding reputation as a top summer destination among European sun-seekers and a top winter retreat for those looking to escape Northern Europe’s coldest months. Plus, Portugal has the lowest cost of living in Western Europe, on average 30% lower than other countries.Bottom line, the Algarve offers an opportunity to savor the best of an old-school, Old World lifestyle at a very affordable cost. Here you can enjoy the best the Continent has to offer, from medieval towns and fishing villages to open-air markets, local wine. This is a land of cobblestoned streets and whitewashed houses with lace-patterned chimneys surrounded by fig, olive, almond, and carob trees.
Here on Portugal’s Algarve, the seafood is fresh, the people are pleasant, the service is friendly, and the wine is affordable on every menu.
Beyond Europe, the Algarve is largely ignored as a retirement haven. If you’re looking for a Continental lifestyle and don’t have the budget for France, Italy, or Spain, Algarve could be your answer.SKU: OHR-ALGARVE-PORTUGAL

Ljubljana and Bled, Slovenia | Overseas Haven Report
Ljubljana may just be the most fascinating city you can’t pronounce. Walking the streets of this city’s historic center, you may mistake yourself for strolling the rues of Paris… or maybe the avenues of Prague… perhaps even the boulevards of Buenos Aires—Ljubljana is as cosmopolitan as any of them.
Yet Slovenia also offers outdoor adventures in spades: skiing, biking, hiking, golf, mineral spas, lakes for boating, vineyards for touring, caves for exploring, and even a few kilometers of beaches. If you value being able to hit the beach in summer and the slopes in winter, Slovenia provides the best of all worlds.
Slovenia’s natural charm is best experienced in the fairy tale lake and ski resort town of Bled, nestled in the Julian Alps only 20 minutes from Ljubljana. Each city benefits greatly by its proximity to the other; if you live in Ljubljana, Bled is an enchanting and easy escape, and if you live in Bled, you’ve got the capital and all it comes with right at your doorstep. Santander, Spain | Overseas Haven Report
Our Overseas Haven Report on Santander, Spain features a destination of simplicity, cleanliness, friendly people, and a real look at Spanish living.
With its magnificent view over the Bay of Santander, it’s not surprising that Santander, a small but bustling and interesting city on Spain’s Atlantic Coast, is justly proud of being a member of the “Most Beautiful Bays in the World Club.”
Located on the Costa Verde—or Green Coast, so-called thanks to its lush greenery—Santander is built on a series of hills overlooking the Bay of Biscay. It is largely a modern city that was rebuilt in 1941 following a huge fire. Almost all of the Old Town was destroyed, but what emerged was a handsome city built along an accessible and beautiful seafront with several white-sand beaches. That modernity is really summed up by the moving sidewalks that climb between the residential areas.
This used to be the haunt of Spanish royalty, and much of the architecture reflects the glamour and richesse that that long relationship endowed with the Royal Palace and courtiers’ homes all along the seafront, a ritzy casino, and very well-manicured parks and beaches.
This is not a hot location; in fact, it has a damp, mild, and Atlantic climate, with fairly constant average winter temperatures between 46ºF to 53ºF, while the summers rarely go above 86ºF. On the plus side, it is rare for snow to fall, but it does rain—expect some every month and the most (up to 7 inches) in November.
If you like the outdoors, sports, and a four-season, temperate climate, you will enjoy Santander and the beautiful scenery surrounding the city and its immediate environment. There is enough to keep culture vultures happy, but if you tire of what’s on offer, it’s a short journey to Bilbao or even Madrid for a weekend to top up on the latest exhibitions and shows.SKU: OHR-SANTANDER-SPAIN
