“Kathleen, you keep mentioning Medellin, Colombia, but it is a city of almost 4 million residents, and some of us are not interested in such a huge city. Are there smaller towns in Colombia that are safe and affordable that you might recommend?
“We currently reside in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and love that it is a beautiful walking town with moderate temperatures, even though not the cheapest place to live, but we are hoping to move on to Colombia or someplace else, when we learn Spanish.

Yes, Medellin is only the start of all that Colombia has to offer the would-be expat and retiree right now. Just outside Medellin, for example, is the small colonial mountain town of El Retiro, which could be a great (and, yes, very safe) place to live.
