“Kathleen, you have mentioned that rentals in Santa Fe, Panama, are very cheap. I did not see any of those on the Internet. Please advise what would be the best way to find those nice and cheap rentals in Santa Fe.”
–Ray C., United States
Spending time in Santa Fe. You won’t find the super-bargain-priced properties for sale or for rent that I’ve referenced on the Internet, not in Santa Fe and not anywhere. The properties you find on the Internet are listed by owners targeting the foreign market. Certainly, you won’t find good deals online if you search in English. Search in the local language (Spanish in the case of Santa Fe), and you’ll penetrate to a more local market. However, to find the best deals, you’ll need to become connected locally. Spend time in Santa Fe, walking around, asking questions. If you don’t speak Spanish, you’ll need to associate yourself with someone who does who you trust. He (or she) will find you a good deal.
“Kathleen, thank you for your very informative overseas newsletter. As a new subscriber contemplating retirement in Southeast Asia, I purchased your reports on Chiang Mai, Ipoh, Penang, Bali, and Kuala Lumpur. Kudos! to you and your correspondents for these very informative articles on those areas.
“Penang and Kuala Lumpur are on the top of our list as they afford us easy access to my wife’s family in South Korea.
“I have occasional concerns that the government of Malaysia might begin to implement more Sharia laws into their daily living and alter their constitution.
“Besides Chiang Mai, even though they have political stability issues lately, as per Wendy Justice’s article, are there other Asian destinations that would meet the criteria of Live and Invest?”
–Ralph M., United States
Other Asian destinations we’ve featured recently in our Overseas Retirement Letter (which is to say, other Asian destinations that would, as you suggest, meet our criteria for retirement living) include:
- Hoi An, Vietnam…
- Nha Trang, Vietnam…
- Cebu Island, Philippines…
- Chiang Rai, Thailand…
- and (the subject of the August Overseas Retirement Letter issue, in production now) Hua Hin, Thailand.
