The Real Cost Of Living In Belize

“Kathleen, I just came back from Ambergris Caye, Belize, and saw a couple of nice condos projects.

“I saw Mahogany, very interesting, and Diamond Points, also very interesting. Captain Morgan way too expensive, and Grand Bayman was very deceiving. Why not advertise that it is at maximum 100 feet from the tarmac!

“Why are you saying that you can live here with a budget of US$1,200 when a peanut butter jar (small), a loaf of bread, a jar of spaghetti sauce, noodles, and a pound of coffee cost US$35?

“I think it is misleading people to make them believe living there is heaven. Please let the others know!”

Thanks for sharing your feedback and glad you were able to put your feet on the ground in Belize to determine if it’s a place that might make sense for you… or not.

Our budget for living on Ambergris Caye is BZ$4,223, or US$2,111.50. Take a look here. That’d be a starter budget, as we say, a basic budget. For sure, you could spend more—by buying imported grocery items like peanut butter and spaghetti sauce in a jar. Much more affordable would be locally grown fruits and vegetables, for example. Though, remember, Ambergris Caye is a small island… so most everything available there is imported at least from mainland Belize.

More affordable choices in Belize would be Cayo and Northern Belize. Our starter budgets for these places come in at BZ$2,430 and BZ$3,080, respectively.

Good luck as you continue your search for the place that, for you, qualifies as ideal.
