Denis Foynes – As Ace Hotels opens its first foreign outpost in London next month, it has also announced on their Facebook page that they are opening a new hotel in Panama, opening this Fall.
Ace Hotel’s announcement follows the trend in recent years of luxury hotels such as the Waldorf and the Trump opening locations in Panama.
“Casco reminds me of old Havana,” remarked Ace’s co-founder, Alex Calderwood. “You have these beautiful 16th-, 17th- and 18th- century buildings—some restored, some not—and there’s also this excitement there.”
His construction integrates two storied buildings in Casco Viejo, including the original American Trade department store, which was constructed in 1917 as a place where wealthy locals and foreigners could buy U.S. products. (At the time it was the tallest building in Panama and only the second to have an elevator.)
The hotel is set to be more upscale than its U.S. locations and the “hipster style” of the hotel will fit in well with Casco’s trendy, cool vibe.
The hotel will have an organic restaurant, a jazz bar, and a rooftop pool. Panamanian coffee will be roasted on-site and served in the lobby cafe.
Although Ace Hotel is saying the hotel would open in the Fall, reservations are actually open for Jan. 1, 2014 with rooms starting at US$339 a night.
Here is the statement on Ace Hotel’s website-
“The American Trade Hotel and Hall opens in Fall 2013 in Panama City, occupying a lovingly restored landmark building in Casco Viejo. The property stands at the ecological and cultural crossroads of the Americas, deeply connected to both the historic Old Quarter and the nascent new Panama City — a meeting place for influencers, creative types, and cultures from around the world.
“The property and surrounding area are steeped in local heritage and culture, while the hotel has been thoroughly outfitted with the contemporary conveniences and modern luxuries today’s traveler requires. The property is the result of a joint undertaking between Atelier Ace, Panama City-based Conservatorio, and Commune Design. American Trade Hotel is the first independent, luxury addition to Atelier Ace’s portfolio, which also includes the distinctive Ace Hotel.”
