Chavez Launches His Presidential Battle


Despite a year-long battle with cancer, Hugo Chavez the Venezuelan leader has launched his campaign for presidency. The election cavalcade rolled out in Mariara and then travelled on down the road in an open top bus to Maracay. If Chavez wins the election on October 7 he could serve 20 years in office. Meanwhile, his opponent Henrique Capriles, the center-left governor of Miranda state headed to the more remote regions of Venezuela which, he says, Chavez has ignored. On his visit to the south eastern community of Santa Elena on the Brazilian border, Capriles took the opportunity to reveal his plan to emulate the neighboring Brazil’s economic policies.
