According to El Telegrafo, Ecuador’s Minister of Transport and Public Works has announced that the Oyacoto stretch of road that links Quito, Ecuador, to a nearby community will be closed for five to six months. Damage caused by a recent 5.1-magnitude earthquake Aug. 12 made the road too dangerous for use.
The piece of road is part of the Pan-American Highway, which runs almost continuously from Alaska to Argentina.
An alternate stretch of road has been designated as a detour route that passes near the new airport in Quito. Traffic is expected to be heavier than the usual on this already busy roadway during this period.
