El Sultán

Panamanian director Enrique Castro Ríos recently made his feature film debut with the movie “Sultán,” which tackles matters of race and segregation through the story of a boy, his mother and grandmother, survivors of the U.S. military invasion of Panama in 1989. Written and directed by Ríos and produced by María Neyla Santamaría, “Sultán” is the first feature film produced with the support of the Panama Film Commission and represents the rise of a new Panamanian independent film industry.

Director Ríos was previously awarded best Central American short film at the Icarus Film Festival of Guatemala in 2010 for the short film “Wata.”

The film features veteran actor Nina Vincent and marks the debut of Delicia Montañez and Alex Jiménez, all from Panama, as well as Jerónimo Henao of Colombia.
