Denis Foynes – Over the past few months there has been a massive shortage of toilet paper in Venezuela. However the citizens searching the supermarkets across the country for their needs now have some digital help.
The shortage has come due to price controls imposed by the government. However, newly elected President Maduro claims that anti-government militaries are purposely buying up basics like toilet paper to weaken the country.
The free program, launched last week, uses crowdsourcing technology to allow users to let each other know which supermarkets still have supplies of the tissue as well as flour, sugar, milk, and cooking oil. It has already been downloaded 12,000 times with most of the takers coming from the capital city, Caracas.
Creator Jose Augusto Montiel states “Lots of things are in short supply, but what people are most worried about is finding toilet paper. People never knew how much they needed it until it started running out.”
“I’m also working to develop it for the Blackberry as a lot of people have them in Venezuela,” he added.
