Tokyo Governor In Olympics Gaffe

The governor of Tokyo has to apologize for comments he made about rival city Istanbul. Both cities have launched rival bids to host the 2020 Olympic Games.

The governor, Naoki Inose, who is also the chairman of Tokyo’s Olympic bid committee, claimed that “Islamic countries, the only thing they share in common is Allah and they are fighting with each other.” He also criticized Turkish facilities. “For the athletes, where will be the best place to be? Well, compare the two countries where they have yet to build infrastructure and very sophisticated facilities,” he stated.

“I am apologizing as my remarks could be misinterpreted by people in the Islamic world, so I am clearly apologizing for this,” he explained in a press conference.

The Turkish sporting Minister has released a statement claiming the comments were “unfair and disheartening”.
