For more than 40 years, I’ve tempted readers with dreamy visions.
Retire overseas, I’ve suggested…
Go where the weather’s sunny, the people friendly, the scene outside your window enchanting.
Restart your life where the cities are safe and the medical care is top-notch… as well as way, way cheaper than whatever you’re paying for health care and health insurance right now.
Retire overseas and your life can be richer and fuller…
You can reduce your cost of living. Maybe dramatically.
You can take charge. Put yourself in control of your tomorrow.
I continue to bang that drum, louder than ever, because retiring overseas today brings more upside than ever.
Trouble is, “retire overseas” leaves you hanging.
So, after more than four decades covering this beat, I’m turning the page.
Retiring overseas is a dream whose time has come.
It’s time to talk about the reality.
So let’s take this conversation to the next level.
In addition to teasing you with the benefits of retiring overseas, now I want to show you what it’s like to be:
Retired Overseas.
It’s the name of my new podcast.
I’ve been helping people retire overseas for 40 years. The best part is the stories.
Firsthand tales of success provide a blueprint for others (people like you) to make their own dreams of a new life overseas come true.
That’s why I’ve created this new platform to share them.
Each journey is different, so for each episode of my “Retired Overseas” podcast I invite real-life expats to tell their stories to help me showcase the world’s best places to retire overseas from diverse firsthand perspectives.
My aim is to demystify the idea of starting over in a new country while giving a glimpse of the delightful range of directions this big idea can take.
These special conversations are available exclusively to members of my Overseas Living Elite community.
In recent episodes, I’ve spoken with Jeff and Joch Woodruff who retired to Portugal during the pandemic. They literally caught the last plane out. These guys don’t believe in easy!
I’ve interviewed retired Veteran John Davis who has reclaimed his life post-military service on the sandy shores of the Dominican Republic and now devotes himself to helping fellow retired Veterans likewise find peace, purpose, and community overseas.
I’ve shared the story of Geraldine and Paul, who retired just last month to beach town Venao on Panama’s Pacific coast for the sun, the sea, and the greatly reduced cost of living… and Lee Harrison who retired overseas 25 years ago and has since called six Latin American countries home. Lee’s adventure continues today in Mazatlan, Mexico.
My next guest will be Kelly Demele.
Three years ago, when Kelly, a nurse, took time off to care for her father-in-law, she spent that time researching outside-the-box options for retirement. Her research led her to Belize. In November 2022, she made her first trip to the country to see for herself what retired life here might be like.
Kelly fell in love with Belize’s Cayo District. I understand. I had the same reaction the first time I saw Cayo some three-and-a-half decades ago.
Kelly had had enough of noisy city life, traffic, pollution, chaos, high prices, and taxes. She was ready to make the leap. Cayo, Belize, checked all her boxes.
So Kelly returned home to Florida, put her house on the market, packed up her belongings, hired an international moving company and a Belizean consultant, and got on the plane to Belize with her dog Baxter.
I’ll stop there. I don’t want to give away anymore of Kelly’s story.
Kelly will join me for this month’s “Retired Overseas” podcast on Tuesday, Oct. 21, to tell you the rest of her story herself.
I will indulge in one more spoiler: Kelly loves her new life. Cayo is her dream come true.
As the recently retired overseas nurse practitioner puts it, “This is just what the doctor ordered.”
Until next time,
