Ferragudo, Portugal: A Picturesque Town In The Algarve

Ferragudo, Portugal, is an interesting choice for expats. For instance, the minimum monthly wage in Portugal is 820 euros. That puts things into context. Rent, groceries… everything, really, is very affordable.

Portugal is our long-reigning queen, having dominated the top or runner-up spots for about a decade now, and 2024 was no different. It’s hard to knock a country with so much going for it from the winner’s podium…

Getting To Ferragudo, Portugal

Faro Airport is the closest airport to Ferragudo, and most visitors arrive through here before continuing on to Portimão or Ferragudo.

Faro Airport is the main airport that serves the southern side of Portugal and the Algarve. The airport is near the town of Faro, which provides onward transport options to other resort towns.

The airport is well laid out, with all the services and amenities that are required. English is the second language of the airport and is spoken fluently by all the staff. It’s small and more personal than many other airports. It’s also seasonal—vast numbers pass through in the summer months, but it’s comparatively quiet for the rest of the year.

Beware of the budget airlines that arrive and depart from Faro—they have long check-in queues, so allow extra time to pass through to passport control. Larger airlines, like British Airways, tend to have a smoother and quicker check-in process. Connections can also be made from Faro Airport to Lisbon’s international airport, which has a much wider choice of onward travel across the world.

The airport is poorly connected to Faro town itself and to the public transport network. If you haven’t rented a car, you will need to catch a taxi or arrange a private transfer in advance to travel into Faro and connect with onward travel options. The Faro train or bus services will then connect you with all the major resorts.

The Algarve has two main roads: the N125, which gets extremely busy in the summer months but is toll-free, and the A22 motorway, which runs from the eastern border with Spain to just west of Lagos.

The tolls are not expensive on the motorway, but the system for paying them is rather complex. You can’t pay as you go. Instead, you need a card-reader affixed to your windscreen.

Things To Do In Ferragudo, Portugal

Almost every town across the Algarve has a strong expat community. Walk into any local café or restaurant, and you’re likely to meet people from all nationalities. Friendships can be formed casually, or you can join a club that interests you.

All sorts of groups and clubs meet across the region, and Facebook is an excellent place to look for them. There are sports clubs and activities for all ages and abilities, as well as art and photography classes and groups.

Nationality-specific groups meet regularly. There are Portuguese language classes for groups, which are another good way to meet new people. You’ll find athletics and running clubs, football groups, golf societies, fitness classes, yoga, and tennis clubs. Several walking groups meet regularly.

You could also consider volunteering. There are several pet-rescue centers that always require dog-walkers, or try Centre Algarve, which is a holiday center for children with special needs. Having a dog that requires a nice long walk every day is another excellent way to meet people, especially locals.

No current clubs or activities are actually based in Ferragudo, but the nearby towns of Lagoa and Portimão have a range of activities, clubs, and venues to explore.

Health Care In Ferragudo, Portugal

According to the 2019 WHO Health Care Report, Portugal ranks 12th out of 190 for health care, which sums up the country’s health care provision quite well. Portugal’s state health care system, which is paid for by taxes, is typically available to all residents in Portugal, but many expats take out private health insurance as well.

For U.S. and other non-EU citizens, you will need private health insurance for your visa entry, but if you gain residency and live here, you can access the state system.

Prices for private health insurance range from several hundred euros per year up to (or even over) 3,000 euros per year. Costs depend on many factors, including your age, overall health, and any previous or current conditions. Depending on your policy, you may still have to pay a small percentage of the costs for treatment. In Portugal, private hospitals do not have facilities for all treatments, and depending on your condition, you may still need to go through the state health care system.

In the state system, you can register with your local health center, but because of staffing issues across the Algarve, you’re unlikely to be registered with an actual doctor. If you need to see a doctor, most health centers run a type of triage system: you turn up first thing in the morning, tell the receptionist what’s wrong, and depending on the numbers for the day, you’re most likely to be seen that morning or given an appointment to return in the afternoon.

Longer waiting times occur if you need to see a specialist, and waiting times of over a year are sadly common. This is where people resort to the private system. The private system also means that you’re more likely to meet with an English-speaking doctor. Although English is widely spoken, especially by those more senior in the health care industry, this isn’t always the case. Private hospitals tend to have doctors who can speak several languages.

Lagos, Portimão, and Faro all have state hospitals, which also cover emergencies. Smaller private clinics and hospitals are found across the Algarve.

The AFPOP group charges an annual membership of 85 euros (single) or 100 euros (couple), and membership entitles you to discounted health-insurance policies. From Ferragudo, your local centro de saúde (health center) will be in nearby Lagoa. This is an excellent state-run facility, with staff who will usually speak some English.

Dental clinics are found across the Algarve, and unless you are covered under your private health insurance, you will pay per visit. Prices are reasonable: 50 euros for a check-up and polish, 60 euros for a basic tooth extraction. A bridge implant costs around 1,000 euros. Many dentists speak English.

Opticians are not cheap. Some people travel to the U.K. on a cheap flight for a weekend, get their eyes tested, pick up glasses, and return to Portugal while still spending less than they would have locally. Expect to pay 25 euros for a thorough eye test. A pair of basic reading glasses costs around 150 to 180 euros, and complex varifocals around 700 to 900 euros (more for designer frames).
