Unassuming… peaceful… fresh… welcoming…. These are the terms that come to mind when you visit Volcán. Sitting at 1,400 meters above sea level, Volcán offers much of the same natural appeal as nearby Boquete, but it’s much quieter and more peaceful, less dominated by tourists and expats.
Volcán is remote and sparsely populated. This is a farming community, and it boasts some of the most fertile farmland in the country. Known as the breadbasket of Panama, the Volcán area provides at least 75% of Panama’s fruit, vegetables, meat, and milk.
Rows of greenhouses and terraced produce farms (growing potatoes, carrots, onions, cabbage, lettuce, corn, bananas, tomatoes, cauliflower, and broccoli) punctuate the mountainside.
Dairy farms, horse ranches, and chicken and pig farms are widespread. A laid-back, pastoral place, local traffic occasionally consists of herds of cattle lumbering down the road.

Found in far eastern Panama, Volcán is far from Panama City—about a seven-and-a-half hour drive. You can also take a bus from Panama City to David and change there for Volcán.
Alternatively, you can catch a flight from Panama City to David and then drive or take a bus or taxi on to Volcán.
Your monthly budget for Volcán should be about US$1,500.
You can rent a two-bedroom, two-bathroom house for about $500. Your utility bill will be negligible, as air conditioning isn’t necessary here.
Your monthly groceries can be covered for about $300 if you choose to buy local produce (being in Volcán, this is something you might want to take advantage of).

The nearest quality medical care and surgery options are a one-hour drive away in David.
There, the two quality private hospitals are Centro Médico Mae Lewis located on the Pan American Highway and Hospital Chiriquí. Both are very popular with the expat population, and costs are reasonable.
More and more retirees, families, and entrepreneurs are moving to Volcán and surrounding areas. It has become the third-largest condensed area of expats in Chiriquí. The expat community is friendly and supportive of each other and are welcomed by the locals.
All the necessary suppliers are found in Volcán, like hardware stores, large supermarkets, bakeries, banks, boutique hotels, and pharmacies, as well as feed stores, saddleries, and auto- and tire-repair shops.
David is just 40 minutes away, so whatever is not available in Volcán can be purchased there.
The infrastructure is close to excellent: uninterrupted electricity, potable tap water, and internet and cable (Cable & Wireless, and Sky Satellite) are all readily available and reasonably priced.
Volcán has historically experienced low rates of crimes of any sort (petty theft, violent crimes, etc.). That’s not to say petty theft never occurs.
Just make sure to take all the necessary precautions to ensure you don’t become a victim (store away all valuables, roll your car windows up and lock everything, lock your house’s front and back door, etc.).
Volcán is perfect for nature lovers. There are two virtually untamed parks: Volcán Barú National Park and La Amistad Park, both with trails through the jungle.
Hike to the top of Volcán Barú on a clear day and gaze at both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.
Though inland, Volcán is great for fishing with streams and lakes alive with trout.
Just a few kilometers outside of town is the site of a rare and important archaeological dig that you can visit called Sitio Barriles.
The nightlife is quiet in Volcán but there are bars, a disco, and a pool hall.
In Volcán, the average temperature ranges between 59°F and 77°F (15°C to 25°C).

In Volcán, English is not yet widely spoken. At least a smattering of Spanish is necessary to get by here.
Volcan sits 1,400 meters (4,617 feet) above sea level.
Popular spots include Burricos on Calle Principal. Serving Panamanian and Mexican fusion food, they are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays, and closed on Sunday.
Los Brezos Volcán on Calle 3ra Norte is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday through Friday. Serving a mix of international, local, and vegetarian dishes as well as drinks.
Other spots include Cerro Brujo Gourmet, Mama Chila Café, and Baru-Queb-go Cinema Café.
